Dr. Aaron P. Smith, a native of New Martinsville, West Virginia, received his B. S. in Biology (with a minor in Chemistry) from Fairmont State University in 1997. He earned his doctorate in Plant Genetics in 2003 at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, with Peter Goldsbrough as his advisor. Smith then did his postdoctoral work at the University of Georgia with Rich Meagher. In 2008 he joined the Department of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University as an assistant professor. Smith is an expert in plant molecular genetics. His research investigates the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that regulate responses to environmental stress. Smith is married to Megan Macnaughtan, who is an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at Louisiana State University. They have a ten-year old son, Samuel, and a six-year old daughter, Suzanna.
